| mise en abyme at the Boston Beehive's "Sting! 2" is a site-specific celebration of those who have come before us -- the eminent and the overlooked -- to sing, act, write, orate, entertain, create. From their ideas our own take root and grow, for us and for those who will come later. The artwork takes the form of a “cigarette girl,” a nod to the circus and vaudeville sparked by the space and ambiance of The Beehive. The “cigarette girl’s” costume and the wares she sells are creations drawn literally and figuratively from those they spotlight. We are each inextricably connected to history – past, present, and future. This connection may be likened to the experience of standing between two mirrors, seeing oneself stretch off forever in either direction. The French call this “mise en abyme” – placing into infinity. |
